Bawumia mourns Yaa Naa Abukari II

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Dagbon Kingdom following the death of Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Monday, July 13, 2026, Dr. Bawumia said he received news of the revered traditional ruler’s passing with profound sorrow.

He extended his sympathies to the chiefs and people of Dagbon, describing the late Yaa Naa as a remarkable leader whose reign brought peace, unity and progress to the kingdom.

According to Dr. Bawumia, Yaa Naa Abukari II ascended to the Dagbon skin during one of the most challenging periods in the kingdom’s history but successfully guided his people through wisdom, patience and exemplary leadership.

He noted that although the late King’s reign lasted just over seven years, its impact would be remembered for generations.

Dr. Bawumia said the late monarch played a key role in reuniting families and restoring harmony to a kingdom that had experienced years of division and conflict.

He further praised Yaa Naa Abukari II for embracing both tradition and modernity while consistently advocating development initiatives aimed at improving the lives of the people of Dagbon.

Reflecting on his personal relationship with the late King, Dr. Bawumia said he benefited immensely from the monarch’s wise counsel during his tenure as Vice President and later as the NPP’s presidential candidate.

He added that it was always a privilege to visit the Gbewaa Palace and receive guidance from the Dagbon Overlord.

Describing the monarch’s passing as a huge personal loss, Dr. Bawumia said Ghana had lost a respected traditional leader whose contribution to peace and national development would not be forgotten.

He concluded by praying for Allah to grant eternal rest to the late Yaa Naa and to comfort his family, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, as well as the entire nation during this period of mourning.
