‘I stopped attending church after Pentecost used funds to build a prison’ – Miner

Miner stopped attending Church of Pentecost

A Ghanaian miner has stirred debate on social media after revealing why he stopped attending the Church of Pentecost, claiming the church’s decision to invest in a prison project influenced his decision to leave.

Speaking in an interview that has since gone viral, the miner said he has never been deeply committed to church attendance but decided to completely stop worshipping with the Church of Pentecost after learning that the denomination had used some of its resources to construct a correctional facility.

According to him, he believes money contributed by church members through tithes and offerings should be channelled into projects that directly improve the lives of congregants and the wider community rather than the construction of prisons.

The miner argued that while he appreciates the church’s role in national development, he disagrees with prioritising prison infrastructure over initiatives such as hospitals, schools and direct support for struggling members.

His remarks have generated mixed reactions online, with some social media users supporting his position, while others defended the Church of Pentecost’s decision, noting that correctional facilities form part of national development and can contribute to the rehabilitation of inmates.

The Church of Pentecost has in recent years undertaken several social intervention projects across Ghana, including educational, health and security-related infrastructure, as part of its community development initiatives. The prison project formed part of those interventions aimed at supporting the country’s correctional system.

The miner’s comments have reignited public discussions about how religious organisations utilise donations from members and whether churches should focus more on welfare programmes or broader national development projects.

As reactions continue to pour in, the interview has become one of the latest talking points on social media, with many Ghanaians sharing differing opinions on the role churches should play in addressing societal needs.
