Colombia Star goes into hiding after receiving death threats for missing chance at World Cup

Jaminton Campaz death threats

Colombia international Jaminton Campaz has reportedly received death threats following his country’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, prompting the Colombia Football Federation to call for an official investigation.

The reported threats come after Colombia’s World Cup campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion, reviving memories of one of the darkest moments in the country’s football history—the murder of defender Andrés Escobar after the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

According to reports, the Colombia Football Federation has asked the country’s Attorney General to investigate the alleged threats made against Campaz and members of his family.

In a statement, the Federation strongly condemned the reported intimidation.

“No athlete, nor any member of their inner circle, should be subjected to intimidation for representing their country in a sporting arena.”

Colombia impressed during the tournament, progressing from the group stage before defeating Ghana 1-0 in the Round of 32 to book a place in the last 16.

However, their World Cup journey came to an end after a goalless draw against Switzerland, with the European side advancing on penalties.

Campaz found himself at the centre of attention after missing a crucial opportunity in the 114th minute of extra time. The 26-year-old curled his effort over the crossbar in what proved to be Colombia’s best chance to secure victory before the shootout.

According to the New York Post, Campaz did not return to Colombia with teammates James Rodríguez and Juan Quintero following the team’s elimination, with reports at the time indicating that his whereabouts were unknown.

The midfielder later addressed the situation in an emotional post on Instagram, apologising to supporters while urging them not to allow football disappointment to fuel hatred.

“My Colombia, please let us never lose sight of respect. We may hold different views or feel frustration and sadness, but no passion justifies hatred or living in fear.”

He continued by expressing regret over the team’s elimination while insisting he gave everything for his country.

“I deeply regret not being able to bring you the joy we all hoped for, but I gave everything I had on the pitch, and I would do it a thousand times over for my country.”

The reported threats have sparked widespread concern within the football community, with many calling for greater protection for players who often face abuse after major tournaments.

The Colombia Football Federation has maintained that no footballer or their family should be subjected to intimidation or threats simply for representing their country.
