According to a source close to the GFA, discussions held after Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign ended with both the football association and the Sports Ministry agreeing that the experienced Portuguese tactician is the right person to continue leading the Black Stars.

The source indicated that Queiroz is expected to sign a two-year contract, which will keep him in charge as Ghana prepares for its upcoming international assignments.

His primary objective will be to guide the Black Stars to victory at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana has not lifted the AFCON trophy since 1982, with ending the country’s long wait for continental glory now becoming the team’s main target.

Queiroz was appointed on a short-term basis ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following changes to the Black Stars’ technical bench.

Under his leadership, Ghana progressed from the group stage after recording a win over Panama, drawing with England and advancing to the knockout stage despite losing to Croatia in their final group match.

The Black Stars’ World Cup journey eventually ended in the Round of 32, where they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia.

Despite the elimination, the GFA and the Sports Ministry are understood to be satisfied with the team’s overall progress and the direction established under the former Portugal, Iran and Egypt coach.

An official announcement on Queiroz’s contract extension is expected in the coming days if negotiations are successfully concluded.

The Black Stars will now shift their focus to the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, where Ghana has been drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, Somalia and The Gambia.
