“We Can’t Blame Anyone” — Gideon Mensah Breaks Silence After Ghana’s Painful World Cup Exit

Black Stars defender Gideon Mensah has admitted that Ghana’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup is a painful disappointment but believes the experience will make the team stronger in future competitions.
Speaking after Ghana’s 1-0 Round of 32 defeat to Colombia, the left-back reflected on the emotions within the squad, stressing that the players remain united despite the heartbreaking elimination.
The Black Stars bowed out of the tournament after a closely contested encounter in which Colombia capitalised on a decisive moment to secure victory and progress to the Round of 16.
Reflecting on the nature of knockout football, Mensah noted that unlike the group stage, there is no room for recovery once a team loses.
“It doesn’t get easy. It’s not like you are playing in the group stages where you have a second game or a third game. It’s a knockout stage,” he said.
The defender also addressed the circumstances surrounding Colombia’s winning goal, which came after a change in Ghana’s defensive setup.
“You try as much to equalise or to win the game any way you can. It’s quite unfortunate that we got a goal after Marvin went out on Alidu’s side. It’s part of the game. You can’t blame him. You can’t blame nobody. We went out on the field as a team and then we came out as a team,” he added.
Mensah’s comments underline the team’s determination to stand together despite the disappointment, rejecting attempts to place blame on individual players for the defeat.
Although Ghana’s World Cup campaign ended earlier than many supporters had hoped, the defender expressed confidence that the lessons learned from competing on football’s biggest stage would help the Black Stars improve and return stronger in future tournaments.
