Speaking ahead of Saturday’s knockout encounter in Kansas City, the Portuguese tactician acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge but expressed confidence in his team’s determination to fight for victory.
“It is a challenge for us to improve the stat (of African teams), and we will do our best to make everybody back home proud,” Queiroz told Ghanaian sports journalist Gary Al-Smith.
The Black Stars coach also took a moment to sympathise with victims of the recent floods that devastated parts of Accra, describing the disaster as one that has deeply affected both him and his players.
According to Queiroz, the squad has been following developments back home and hopes a positive result against Colombia can provide some comfort to those affected.
“The floods have affected me personally. The team will try and give those affected something to smile about,” he said.
Ghana will take on Colombia on Saturday, July 3, with a place in the Round of 16 at stake.
Victory would see the Black Stars reach the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup for the first time since their memorable run in 2010 and keep alive the dream of an African nation making history at the tournament.
With national pride and continental hopes on the line, the Black Stars will be aiming to produce another memorable performance as they seek to extend their World Cup journey
