High Court Sentences Chairman Wontumi to 20 Years in Prison in Samreboi Mining Case
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after being found guilty in the Samreboi illegal mining case.

The judgment was delivered by the Accra High Court on Monday, July 20, 2026, bringing to an end months of legal proceedings involving Wontumi and Akonta Mining over alleged illegal mining activities in the Samreboi forest reserve.
The court found Wontumi guilty in relation to offences arising from the unlawful assignment of mining rights and activities connected to the Samreboi concession.

The case attracted nationwide attention after prosecutors alleged that mining rights connected to Akonta Mining were transferred without the approval required under Ghana’s mining laws. Wontumi had consistently denied any wrongdoing throughout the trial.
Earlier this month, the High Court postponed judgment to allow Wontumi’s new lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, additional time to file written submissions after taking over the defence. The case was subsequently adjourned to July 20 for the final ruling.
The conviction marks one of the most significant illegal mining prosecutions involving a high-profile political figure in recent years and is expected to generate widespread political and legal debate.
