Government Paid GH¢107 Million in Allowances to Assembly Members in 2025 – Ahmed Ibrahim

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has disclosed that the government paid GH¢107 million in allowances to Assembly Members across Ghana in 2025.
According to the Minister, the payments fulfilled a campaign promise made by President John Dramani Mahama to provide modest financial support to Assembly Members to aid their work at the local government level.
Speaking before Parliament’s Assurance Committee on Thursday, July 9, Ahmed Ibrahim said a total of 9,090 Assembly Members, made up of both elected and appointed members, benefited from the initiative.
He explained that each Assembly Member received GH¢1,300 as part of the government’s allowance package.
“By December 31, 2025, the President has paid 107 million Ghana cedis to all the Assembly Members in the country. We have 6,272 elected Assembly Members and 2,818 appointed Assembly Members,” he stated.
The Minister further disclosed that the funds were transferred directly to the country’s 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) immediately after the Ministry of Finance released the money.
According to him, the payment process for 2026 is already underway.
“The one for 2026, the first quarter was released this week, and as at yesterday, I gave an order to the Financial Controller. Once it has come, send it to the Assembly Members. So we are on track when it comes to the payment of allowances for Assembly Members,” he said.
Mr. Ibrahim noted that while the implementation of the policy has largely been successful, some Assembly Members raised concerns over tax deductions made from their allowances.
Despite the concerns, he indicated that the government remains committed to ensuring the timely payment of the allowances as part of efforts to strengthen local governance and support the work of Assembly Members across the country.
The allowance policy was one of President Mahama’s campaign commitments aimed at providing financial support to Assembly Members, who play key roles in local governance and community development.
