High Court to hear Abu Trica’s bid to stay US extradition on July 9

Abu Trica extradition

The High Court in Accra has brought forward the hearing of a motion seeking to temporarily halt the extradition of Ghanaian socialite Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, to the United States.

The development was disclosed by Abu Trica’s lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, in a Facebook post on Monday, July 6, 2026.

According to the lawyer, the court has directed both parties to appear on July 9 for the hearing of the application seeking a stay of the extradition order.

“The High Court has just made an order bringing forward the date for hearing of motion to Stay the extradition of Abu Trica. Both parties must appear on 9 July,” Barker-Vormawor wrote.

The latest development follows an earlier ruling by the High Court ordering Abu Trica’s extradition to the United States, where he is wanted in connection with an alleged $8 million romance scam.

Reacting to that decision, Barker-Vormawor had criticised the pace of the proceedings, suggesting the matter could ultimately be determined by the Supreme Court.

“I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast tracked and a judge has just ordered his extradition. Hmmm. FBI 1 – Abu 1. I guess this issue goes to the Supreme Court,” he wrote in an earlier Facebook post.

Abu Trica has been in custody since December 2025. Earlier this year, the High Court granted him GH¢30 million bail with two justified sureties after months in detention.

United States authorities are seeking his extradition over allegations of romance fraud. The hearing scheduled for July 9 is expected to determine whether the extradition order will be temporarily suspended while further legal challenges are pursued.

It is important to note that the extradition proceedings are separate from any determination of criminal guilt, and the allegations against Abu Trica have yet to be adjudicated in a United States court.
