Mobile Money Vendor Guns Down Armed Robber, Recovers GH¢140,000 in Dramatic Shootout at Lashibi

A mobile money vendor has shot and killed one of two armed robbery suspects during a dramatic attack at Lashibi in the Greater Accra Region, leading to the recovery of GH¢140,000 that had been stolen.
According to the Accra Regional Police Command, the incident occurred on Friday, July 3, 2026, when two suspects riding on a motorbike allegedly ambushed the vendor.
In a statement signed by Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs of the Accra Regional Police Command, police said the suspects opened fire on the vendor’s vehicle, damaging its rear tyre and windscreen before making away with a bag containing GH¢140,000.
Police said the vendor returned fire as the suspects attempted to flee, fatally wounding one of them at the scene.
The second suspect escaped but abandoned the bag containing the stolen money, allowing police to recover the entire GH¢140,000 intact. The vendor was not injured during the incident.
A search conducted on the deceased suspect led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, two magazines loaded with 55 rounds of live ammunition, an additional 11 rounds of ammunition, GH¢3,000 in cash, a Samsung mobile phone, and an identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu, aged 46.
Investigators also recovered five AK-47 shell casings and two pistol shell casings from the crime scene.
The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification and autopsy.
Police say the Accra Regional Police Command has taken over investigations and is actively pursuing the second suspect, who remains at large.
The command has appealed to members of the public with information that could assist in the arrest of the fleeing suspect to report to the nearest police station or contact the police through the emergency numbers 18555 or 191.
