Benjamin Asare Becomes First Ghana Goalkeeper to Record Back-to-Back World Cup Clean Sheets

Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has etched his name into Ghana’s football history after becoming the first Black Stars shot-stopper to record back-to-back clean sheets at the FIFA World Cup.

The 33-year-old achieved the milestone during Ghana’s opening two matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup currently being staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Asare first came into action in Ghana’s opening 1-0 win over Panama, where he was introduced at half-time following an injury to first-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi. Despite the pressure of the occasion, he delivered a composed second-half performance to help the Black Stars preserve their narrow lead and secure all three points.

He was later rewarded with a starting role in Ghana’s second Group L match against England at the Gillette Stadium. In what was a highly anticipated clash, Asare produced another calm and assured display between the posts as Ghana held the Three Lions to a goalless draw.

The result meant Ghana have now gone two consecutive World Cup matches without conceding a goal, significantly boosting their chances of advancing to the knockout stage.

What makes the achievement even more remarkable is Ghana’s long World Cup history. Since the Black Stars made their debut in 2006, no goalkeeper has managed to keep clean sheets in consecutive World Cup matches.

Goalkeepers such as Richard Kingson, Adam Kwarasey, Fatau Dauda, and Lawrence Ati-Zigi have all featured in previous editions but were unable to achieve the feat across tournaments in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022.

Asare’s heroics have therefore set a new benchmark in Ghana’s World Cup history, further cementing his growing reputation on the international stage.

The Black Stars will now look to maintain their defensive solidity when they face Croatia in their final Group L fixture on June 27.
