You don’t need to speak ‘Patois’ before you do Reggae Music – Kofi Kinaata

According to Kofi Kinaata, some people believe that in order to perform reggae music, one must be able to speak Jamaican patois.

The Fante singing musician claimed said despite not infusing the elementary patois in his new song Effiakuma Love, he knows it will still resonate with his fans.

He replied, “A number of factors, especially when you pay close attention to the lyrics and vibes I used in the song, prompted me to do Effiakuma Love.

“Some people think that you have to be able to speak the Jamaican patois or a certain language before you can do reggae but I sung in Fante on a reggae beat,” Kinaata told Amansan Krakye seen by MyNewsGh.com

He continued on Cape Coast-based Property FM “Singing in the local dialect on a reggae beat has made a lot of people relate more to Effiakuma Love song and besides I was talking about a love message.

“There are so many aspects of love but I chose a certain part to highlight on a girl who is outspoken and able to explain herself but people misconstrue her confidence for arrogance,” he concluded.

Jamaican Patois, also known as Patwa and Jamaican Creole, is the most widely spoken language in the country. Compared to a reported 50,000 Jamaicans who speak English, there are 2.7 million who speak Jamaican Patois, a type of English creole that arose during the slave trade.
