Captain Smart Defends Abu Trica Interview, Says He Was Only Doing His Job as a Journaliat

Captain Smart Abu Trica interview
Veteran Ghanaian broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has defended his controversial interview with socialite Frederick Kumi, widely known as Abu Trica, insisting that he was simply carrying out his duties as a journalist.

Captain Smart’s remarks come after Abu Trica’s lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, questioned the wisdom of granting a television interview while his client’s extradition case was still before the courts.

Speaking after a recent court hearing, Barker-Vormawor argued that no responsible lawyer would advise a client to publicly discuss an active legal matter, warning that such interviews could complicate ongoing proceedings.

Responding to the criticism, Captain Smart rejected suggestions that his interview had negatively affected Abu Trica’s legal battle.

“I am not a court, first of all. I am not a lawyer, and I only acted in my role as a journalist,” the Onua TV presenter said.

When asked whether the interview had influenced the extradition proceedings, Captain Smart maintained that he saw no evidence to support such claims.

“Why should it affect him? I am not sure it has affected him,” he stated.

The broadcaster also dismissed opinions from social media users who accused him of contributing to Abu Trica’s legal troubles.

According to him, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but he would not respond to comments made by people he does not know personally.

The controversy stems from Abu Trica’s appearance on Onua TV, where he denied allegations linking him to an alleged multi-million-dollar romance fraud scheme and spoke about aspects of the investigation following his arrest. The interview attracted widespread attention and sparked debate over whether suspects involved in ongoing court cases should grant media interviews.

Abu Trica has since been ordered to be extradited to the United States after Ghanaian courts dismissed efforts to halt the process. He is wanted by U.S. authorities over allegations including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, allegations he has denied.

Captain Smart, however, insists that his responsibility was limited to giving his guest an opportunity to speak and that he should not be blamed for the legal consequences of the interview. .
