DONE DEAL? Simba SC Nears Massive Transfer for Kotoko Captain Samba O’Neil
Tanzanian powerhouse Simba SC is reportedly on the verge of completing a high-profile move for Asante Kotoko captain Gilbani Samba O’Neil. According to reports from Many Sports Arena, the Congolese defender is in advanced talks to leave the Porcupine Warriors during the current January transfer window.
The deal, which is expected to be a two-and-a-half-year contract, depends on the successful completion of a medical examination. Once cleared, the 25-year-old center-back will travel to Tanzania to join the Msimbazi-based giants’ training camp.
Asante Kotoko stands to make a significant profit from the sale, with the transfer fee estimated between $100,000 and $150,000. Given that Samba’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the 2025/26 season, Kotoko management appears ready to cash in now rather than lose their captain for free in the summer.
Since joining Kotoko from Burkinabe side Rahimo FC in July 2024, the Congolese stalwart has become the backbone of the Kumasi-based team’s defense.
• Total Appearances: 49 across all competitions.
• Goals/Assists: 3 goals and 1 assist.
• Current Season Form: 15 appearances in the Ghana Premier League with 2 goals, plus a goal in the CAF Confederation Cup.
His departure would leave a massive leadership void in the Asante Kotoko squad, especially as they continue their push for the league title. However, the lure of the Tanzanian NBC Premier League and a fresh challenge with Simba SC who are looking to bolster their defense for the CAF Champions League group stages seems too strong to ignore.
Samba O’Neil’s move would see him follow in the footsteps of several high-profile Ghana Premier League stars who have made the switch to East Africa in recent years. If the deal is finalized this week, he could be integrated into the Simba squad in time for their crucial upcoming continental fixtures.
